From 13th to 16th May 2014, the 16th International Scientific and Industrial Forum “Great Rivers 2014” (environmental, hydrometeorological, energy security) was held at the Nizhny Novgorod Exhibition Centre.
The main theme of the Forum’s scientific congress was “Sustainable development of the regions in the basins of the great rivers. International and inter-regional cooperation and partnership.” The Forum’s scientific congress is traditionally organised by the Nizhny Novgorod State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering. The congress opened on 13th May in the Ceremonial Hall of the Main Pavilion of the Nizhny Novgorod Exhibition Centre. The programme for the Forum’s scientific congress included 12 sections, 3 seminars, 6 conferences, including a student scientific conference, and 7 round table discussions.

During the congress more than 800 lectures were given. The issues examined included ecological and hydrometeorological security, an assessment of the state and protection of water resources, training in the area of sustainable development, and international and inter-regional cooperation on sustainable development.

The participants at the Forum’s scientific congress highlighted the paramount importance of ensuring the sustainable development of the territories in the river basins, of using water resources efficiently, as well as of devising comprehensive, inter-disciplinary, scientifically based practical solutions. They also rated very highly the content of the Forum’s scientific congress, the presentations made at it and the discussions held. A final resolution was passed by the participants on the basis of the results of the Forum, which will be sent to federal and regional government agencies and to scientific and educational organisations.
