The BRIDGE 2014 event, conference dedicated to best practices of EU-Russia university collaboration took place on 3-4 June 2014 at Lappeenranta University of Technolog (LUT), Finland. The conference was intended for academic and other specialists responsible for international cooperation in European and Russian universities. The event gathered nearly 130 representatives from Russian and European higher education institutions and other organisations.
The speakers of the opening session included, among others, Permanent Secretary to the Finnish Minister of Education and Culture Anita Lehikoinen and Deputy Director Boris Zhelezov from the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia. They provided a general overview of the policies, structures, mechanisms and programs supporting European-Russian cooperation in the field of higher education.

In the session dedicated to international university rankings, Editor Phil Baty from the Times Higher Education magazine and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and the U-Multirank project manager Gero Federkeil gave thorough presentations of the university ranking and evaluation tools.

In addition to the two above mentioned themes, the first seminar day included a session, which discussed the impact of higher education on the local and global economies and the role of universities in overcoming economic recession.

On the second day, the seminar focused on strategic partnerships. The speakers of the session discussed forming, managing, communication and evaluation of strategic partnerships between universities. The session provided the audience with concrete elements of successful strategic partnerships between universities.

At the end of the second seminar day, there was a panel discussion on the achievements and benefits of EU-Russia educational projects. The panelists discussed the makings of successful European Russian educational projects and the achievements received from the projects. The panel was chaired by the Head of Unit Maija Airas from the Finnish Centre for International Mobility CIMO.

In the future, the BRIDGE seminar is planned to be organised every two years.
